Res."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1970,2]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>SUMMARY<\/jats:title><jats:p>The effect of ultraviolet radiation (u.v.) on<jats:italic>\u03bb<\/jats:italic>lysogens of<jats:italic>exrA<\/jats:italic>strains of<jats:italic>Escherichia coli<\/jats:italic>was studied.<jats:italic>exrA<\/jats:italic>strains could be lysogenized with, as well as support the vegetative reproduction of, \u03bb. However, though spontaneous induction of \u03bb occurred in<jats:italic>exrA<\/jats:italic>(\u03bb) strain at 10% the frequency of<jats:italic>exrA<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>(\u03bb) strain,<jats:italic>exrA<\/jats:italic>(\u03bb) strains were not induced by u.v. Because \u03bb was not induced in<jats:italic>exrA<\/jats:italic>(\u03bb) strains, lysogens of these strains were no more sensitive to u.v. than were non-lysogens.<\/jats:p><jats:p>The heat-inducible mutant \u03bb<jats:italic>hcI857<\/jats:italic>could be induced in<jats:italic>exrA<\/jats:italic>strains at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, u.v. irradiation of<jats:italic>exrA<\/jats:italic>(\u03bb<jats:italic>hcI857<\/jats:italic>) strain did not prevent the heat induction of this \u03bb mutant. The<jats:italic>exrA<\/jats:italic>mutation appeared to interfere only with the inactivation of \u03bb repressor by u.v.<\/jats:p><jats:p>Among the<jats:italic>exrA<\/jats:italic>strains studied was strain<jats:italic>Bs<\/jats:italic>1(<jats:italic>exr A uvrB<\/jats:italic>).
