Res."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1983,8]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>SUMMARY<\/jats:title><jats:p>A new mutant (<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup><jats:italic>ct<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>) has been identified at the<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic>locus of the mouse. The homozygote is poorly viable. Whereas the heterozygote (<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup><jats:italic>ct<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>\/ +) is only mildly anaemic like<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>\u03c5<\/jats:sup>\/ +, the double heterozygote<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup><jats:italic>ct<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>+ \/ +<jats:italic>Ph<\/jats:italic>is considerably more anaemic than<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>\u03c5<\/jats:sup>+ \/ +<jats:italic>Ph<\/jats:italic>and it and<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup><jats:italic>sh<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>+ \/ +<jats:italic>Ph<\/jats:italic>have significantly raised leucocyte counts.<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup><jats:italic>ct<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>+ \/ +<jats:italic>Ph<\/jats:italic>is also unduly radiosensitive to whole body X-irradiation, 50% dying from haematopoietic failure at a dose of 4\u00b759 \u00b1 0\u00b714 Gy, whereas the median for<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup><jats:italic>ct<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>\/ + was 6\u00b749 \u00b1 0\u00b728 Gy. Serial blood counts of mice after low- or sub-lethal doses of X-rays revealed significantly more profound depression of counts of both red cells and leucocytes in<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup><jats:italic>ct<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>+, and more notably in<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup><jats:italic>ct<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>+ \/ +<jats:italic>Ph<\/jats:italic>, than in + \/ + or<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup><jats:italic>sh<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>\/ + (haematologically normal) iso-dosed mice.
