Res."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1984,10]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>SUMMARY<\/jats:title><jats:p>A new allele at the<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic>-locus (<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>19<jats:italic>H<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>), found in a mutagenesis experiment in which females were irradiated, involves a presumed deletion. The deletion covers the<jats:italic>Ph<\/jats:italic>locus (which forms part of a gene complex with the<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>Ph<\/jats:italic>and<jats:italic>Rw<\/jats:italic>loci), and the locus of a recessive lethal 2 cM distal to<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic>. It does not extend distally to the<jats:italic>bl<\/jats:italic>locus; nor does it involve the<jats:italic>Rw<\/jats:italic>locus,<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>19<jats:italic>H<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>\/<jats:italic>Rw<\/jats:italic>compounds being viable and fertile. Thus, the length of the deletion is 2\u20137 cM. The non-involvement of<jats:italic>Rw<\/jats:italic>shows that, in the gene triplet<jats:italic>Rw<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>Ph<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>Rw<\/jats:italic>must lie proximal to<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic>and<jats:italic>Ph<\/jats:italic>, whose relative position remains unknown. Heteozygotes for<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>19<jats:italic>H<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>are not anaemic, show only minimal white spotting and no pigment dilution; they thus resemble heterozygotes for the original<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic>mutant allele and differ from<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic>\/<jats:italic>Ph<\/jats:italic>trans heterozygotes, which have extensive white spotting. In addition<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>19<jats:italic>H<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>heterozygotes may be small and runted, many are believed to die prenatally, and some in the nest. Their radiosensitivity is increased.
