In a previous paper on mixtures, Block, Mi and Savits (1993) showed that the failure rate behaves like the limiting behavior of the strongest component. We show a similar result here for convolutions. We also show by example that unlike a mixture population, the ultimate direction of monotonicity does not necessarily follow that of the strongest component.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0021900200113518","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,3,30]],"date-time":"2016-03-30T16:26:34Z","timestamp":1459355194000},"page":"894-898","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["The limiting failure rate for a convolution of life distributions"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"52","author":[{"given":"Henry W.","family":"Block","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Naftali A.","family":"Langberg","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Thomas H.","family":"Savits","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,3,30]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0021900200113518_ref9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/TR.2005.847271"},{"key":"S0021900200113518_ref8","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/asmb.750"},{"key":"S0021900200113518_ref7","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"511","DOI":"10.1017\/S0269964804184076","volume":"18","year":"2004","journal-title":"Prob.
