This model of communication, based on speech acts, a declarative message content representation language and the use of explicit ontologies defining the domains of discourse (Genesereth & Ketchpel, 1994), has become widely recognised as having great benefits for the integration of disparate and distributed \ninformation sources to form an open, extensible and loosely coupled system. In particular, this idea has become a key tenet in the multi-agent systems research community.\n                  <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0269888902000310","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2002,8,26]],"date-time":"2002-08-26T21:14:23Z","timestamp":1030396463000},"page":"1-5","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Introduction to the special issue on ontologies in agent systems"],"prefix":"10.48130","volume":"17","author":[{"given":"STEPHEN","family":"CRANEFIELD","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"STEVEN","family":"WILLMOTT","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"TIM","family":"FININ","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"27968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2002,8,21]]},"container-title":["The Knowledge Engineering Review"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/services\/aop-cambridge-core\/content\/view\/S0269888902000310","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,5]],"date-time":"2026-01-05T14:43:15Z","timestamp":1767624195000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/product\/identifier\/S0269888902000310\/type\/journal_article"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2002,3]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2002,3]]}},"alternative-id":["S0269888902000310"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/s0269888902000310","relation":{},"ISSN":["0269-8889","1469-8005"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0269-8889"},{"type":"electronic","value":"1469-8005"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2002,3]]}}}
