Operating procedure synthesis is a problem in which a set of equipment \nmanipulations and their orderings must be generated to take the process from an initial state to a goal state. While there has been ongoing research for about 30 years in this area, only a few systems have been reported to be industrially deployed. The approach taken in this paper is, first, to describe the problem in general terms; second, to discuss previous work in this area; and, finally, to present ideas and directions for future work.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0269888902000498","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2003,2,13]],"date-time":"2003-02-13T10:05:10Z","timestamp":1045130710000},"page":"261-294","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":13,"title":["Operating procedure synthesis: science or art?"],"prefix":"10.48130","volume":"17","author":[{"given":"RAFAEL","family":"BATRES","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"JAMES","family":"SOUTTER","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"STEVEN P.","family":"ASPREY","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"PAUL","family":"CHUNG","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"27968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2003,2,11]]},"container-title":["The Knowledge Engineering Review"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/services\/aop-cambridge-core\/content\/view\/S0269888902000498","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,5]],"date-time":"2026-01-05T14:43:16Z","timestamp":1767624196000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/product\/identifier\/S0269888902000498\/type\/journal_article"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2002,9]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"3","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2002,9]]}},"alternative-id":["S0269888902000498"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/s0269888902000498","relation":{},"ISSN":["0269-8889","1469-8005"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0269-8889"},{"type":"electronic","value":"1469-8005"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2002,9]]}}}
