A serious issue of information exchange emerges as companies \nuse traditional hardware and very distinct software appropriate \nto their field of expertise. To overcome the problem of low \nproductivity due to the interruption of information, the concept \nof simultaneous engineering and concurrent design becomes very \nsignificant. In this article an agent-based ship design system \nis developed to support cooperation in distributed ship design \nenvironments. Above all, the conflicts that occur while sharing \nknowledge in the system must be resolved. One approach is to \nadopt a case-based conflict resolution strategy formulated to \nresolve current conflict on the basis of similar previously \nresolved cases in agent-based collaborative design system \nenvironments. To do this, conflict cases that occur in the initial \nship design stage are extracted. On the basis of the extracted \ncases, a case base is constructed. In addition, a conflict \nresolution handler located in the superagent called a facilitator, \nan agent to control other subagents, is developed to treat conflict \nproblems effectively by case-based reasoning. The case-based \nconflict resolution strategy is evaluated by applying it to \na collaborative design process in the initial ship design stage, \nespecially the machinery outfitting design, the preliminary \ndesign, the hullform design, and the structural design. Through \nthe help of the collaboration of the design agents, the \nfacilitator, the conflict resolution handler, and the case-based \nsystem, a designer can make decisions based on similar previously \nresolved cases.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0890060402020085","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2002,12,11]],"date-time":"2002-12-11T17:12:55Z","timestamp":1039626775000},"page":"93-102","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["Agent-based collaborative design system and conflict resolution \nbased on a case-based reasoning approach"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"16","author":[{"given":"KYUNG HO","family":"LEE","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"KYU-YEUL","family":"LEE","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2002,8,6]]},"container-title":["Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Design, Analysis and Manufacturing"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/services\/aop-cambridge-core\/content\/view\/S0890060402020085","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,3,31]],"date-time":"2019-03-31T15:26:54Z","timestamp":1554046014000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/product\/identifier\/S0890060402020085\/type\/journal_article"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2002,4]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"2","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2002,4]]}},"alternative-id":["S0890060402020085"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/s0890060402020085","relation":{},"ISSN":["0890-0604","1469-1760"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0890-0604","type":"print"},{"value":"1469-1760","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2002,4]]}}}
