However, each of these approaches \nhas limitations. Using word or phrase search, users are faced \nwith a compromise between overly broad searches returning an \nexcessive amount of information or overly narrow searches that \nmay fail to return relevant information. Browsing organizational \nstructures is dependent on the user's knowledge of the \nstructures, and a user may find it difficult to refine searches. \nThis paper introduces a user interface based approach to the \nbrowsing of hierarchically organized information entities that \navoids these problems by allowing the incremental narrowing \ndown of a set of search results and by pruning the organizational \nstructure after each user selection to show the consequences \nof the selection. The effect is to present to the user at all \ntimes only that part of the organizational structure that will \nlead to a nonnull selection. The approach is called no zero \nmatch (NZM) browsing. The paper presents the computational basis \nof NZM browsing before describing a trial implementation of \nthe approach and presenting three case studies, which represent \ncommon search situations in an engineering context.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0890060402163098","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2002,11,14]],"date-time":"2002-11-14T21:56:52Z","timestamp":1037311012000},"page":"243-257","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["No zero match browsing of hierarchically categorized information \nentities"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"16","author":[{"given":"CHRIS","family":"McMAHON","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"ROSE","family":"CROSSLAND","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"ALISTAIR","family":"LOWE","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"TULAN","family":"SHAH","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"JON SIMS","family":"WILLIAMS","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"STEVE","family":"CULLEY","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2002,11,15]]},"container-title":["Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Design, Analysis and Manufacturing"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/services\/aop-cambridge-core\/content\/view\/S0890060402163098","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,4,7]],"date-time":"2019-04-07T18:54:39Z","timestamp":1554663279000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/product\/identifier\/S0890060402163098\/type\/journal_article"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2002,6]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"3","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2002,6]]}},"alternative-id":["S0890060402163098"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/s0890060402163098","relation":{},"ISSN":["0890-0604","1469-1760"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0890-0604","type":"print"},{"value":"1469-1760","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2002,6]]}}}
