Traditional \ncentralized coordination techniques used by general contractors become \ninsufficient as subcontractors perform most work and provide their own \nresources. When subcontractors cannot provide enough resources, they \nhinder their own performance, that of other subcontractors, and \nultimately the entire project. Thus, projects need a new distributed \ncoordination approach wherein all of the concerned subcontractors can \nrespond to changes and reschedule a project dynamically. This paper \npresents a new distributed coordination framework for project schedule \nchanges (DCPSC) that is based on an agent-based negotiation approach \nwherein software agents evaluate the impact of changes, simulate \ndecisions, and give advice on behalf of the human subcontractors. A \ncase example demonstrates the significance of the DCPSC. It compares \ntwo centralized coordination methodologies used in current practice to \nthe DCPSC framework. We demonstrate that our DCPSC framework always \nfinds a solution that is better than or equal to any of two centralized \ncoordination methodologies.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0890060403172022","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2003,12,12]],"date-time":"2003-12-12T16:08:45Z","timestamp":1071245325000},"page":"115-131","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["Distributed coordination of project schedule changes using \nagent-based compensatory negotiation methodology"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"17","author":[{"given":"KEESOO","family":"KIM","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"BOYD C.","family":"PAULSON","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"RAYMOND E.","family":"LEVITT","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"MARTIN A.","family":"FISCHER","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"CHARLES J.","family":"PETRIE","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2003,11,7]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0890060403172022_ref011","unstructured":"Fondahl, J.M.
