Because language has been shown to be \nimportant to the reasoning process in general as well as to specific \nreasoning processes that are central to the design process, we are \ninvestigating the relationship between language and conceptual design. The \nuse of language to facilitate different stages of the design process has \nbeen investigated in the past. Our previous work, and the work of others, \nshowed that ideas produced can be expressed through related hierarchical \nlexical relationships, so we investigated the use of verbs within these \nhierarchical relationships as stimuli for ideas. Participants were \nprovided with four problems and related verb stimuli, and asked to develop \nconcepts using the stimuli provided. The stimuli sets were generated by \nexploring verb hierarchies based on functional words from the problem \nstatements. We found that participants were most successful when using \nlower level (more specific) verbs as stimuli, and often higher level \ngeneral verbs were only used successfully in conjunction with lower level \nverbs. We also observed that intransitive verbs (verbs that cannot take a \ndirect object) were less likely to be used successfully in the development \nof concepts. Overall, we found that the verb chosen as stimulus by the \nparticipant directly affects the success and the type of concept \ndeveloped.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0890060407070175","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,19]],"date-time":"2007-03-19T03:47:12Z","timestamp":1174276032000},"page":"103-121","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":41,"title":["Using language as related stimuli for concept generation"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"21","author":[{"given":"IVEY","family":"CHIU","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"L.H.","family":"SHU","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,19]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0890060407070175_ref001","unstructured":"Burg, J.F.M.
