This paper investigates the role of user-centered design approaches in design process and outcome within the context of design team projects. The value of interaction with users is examined at several stages throughout the design process. The influence of user-centered design on the performance of design teams is also explored. Results suggest that the quantity of interactions with users and time spent interacting with users alone is not linked with better design outcome, but that iterative evaluation of concepts by users may be of particular value to design prototypes. Suggestions are made based on the reflections from the authors after conducting this study.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0890060410000211","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2010,7,12]],"date-time":"2010-07-12T08:34:59Z","timestamp":1278923699000},"page":"303-316","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":23,"title":["A study of the role of user-centered design methods in design team projects"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"24","author":[{"given":"Justin","family":"Lai","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Tomonori","family":"Honda","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Maria C.","family":"Yang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2010,7,12]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0890060410000211_ref34","article-title":"Intelligence vs. understanding","author":"Young","year":"2008","journal-title":"Scroll 1"},{"key":"S0890060410000211_ref6","volume-title":"Third Int.
