Less emphasis has been placed on natural processes by which people acquire knowledge about affordances. Consequently, little is known about how design might be optimized to enable users to detect the actions that are available in a given human\u2013machine system. We review scientific research about what people do to obtain information about affordances. We discuss implications of this research for design.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0890060415000190","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,7,28]],"date-time":"2015-07-28T10:22:58Z","timestamp":1438078978000},"page":"257-265","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":10,"title":["Exploratory movement and affordances in design"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"29","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4781-5429","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Thomas A.","family":"Stoffregen","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Bruno","family":"Mantel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2015,7,28]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0890060415000190_ref12","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1469-8749.2008.03174.x"},{"key":"S0890060415000190_ref3","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.1201\/b10774","volume-title":"Display and Interface Design: Subtle Science, Exact Art","author":"Bennett","year":"2011"},{"key":"S0890060415000190_ref13","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/00140138408963608"},{"key":"S0890060415000190_ref51","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/00222895.2012.706659"},{"key":"S0890060415000190_ref17","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/10407413.2010.496665"},{"key":"S0890060415000190_ref27","first-page":"845","article-title":"Judging and actualizing intrapersonal and interpersonal affordances","volume":"33","author":"Richardson","year":"2007","journal-title":"Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance"},{"key":"S0890060415000190_ref5","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.1201\/9781315272665","volume-title":"Ecological Interface Design","author":"Burns","year":"2004"},{"key":"S0890060415000190_ref16","volume-title":"Proc.
