The sequential segments in a protocol analysis can be related to each other by examining their semantic content producing a design session's linkograph, which defines the design space for a design session. From a linkograph, it is possible to compute the probabilities of the connectivity of each segment for its forelinks and its backlinks, together with the probabilities of distance among links. A linkograph's entropy is a measure of the information in the design session. It is claimed that the entropy of the linkograph measures the potential of the design space being generated as the design proceeds chronologically. We present an approach to the automated construction of linkographs by connecting segments using the lexical database WordNet and measure its entropy. A case study of two design sessions with different characteristics was conducted, one considered more productive and creative, the other more pragmatic. Those segments with high entropy and those associated with high rates of change of entropy are analyzed. The creative session has a higher linkograph entropy. This result indicates the potential of using entropy to characterize a design process.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0890060416000548","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,1,30]],"date-time":"2017-01-30T04:03:01Z","timestamp":1485748981000},"page":"32-43","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["Characterizing innovative processes in design spaces through measuring the information entropy of empirical data from protocol studies"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"32","author":[{"given":"Jeff W.T.","family":"Kan","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"John S.","family":"Gero","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,1,30]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0890060416000548_ref10","first-page":"67","volume-title":"Evaluating and Predicting Design Performance","author":"Goldschmidt","year":"1992"},{"key":"S0890060416000548_ref20","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.24908\/pceea.v0i0.3764"},{"key":"S0890060416000548_ref30","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s00163-009-0084-3"},{"key":"S0890060416000548_ref4","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.1201\/9780824746346","volume-title":"Handbook of Natural Language Processing","author":"Dale","year":"2000"},{"key":"S0890060416000548_ref22","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-1-4020-5131-9_16"},{"key":"S0890060416000548_ref26","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/j.1538-7305.1948.tb01338.x"},{"key":"S0890060416000548_ref23","volume-title":"About Designing: Analysing Design Meetings","author":"McDonnell","year":"2009"},{"key":"S0890060416000548_ref29","unstructured":"Torres D.F.
