However, the agile and flexible qualities of the methodology do not directly translate to every context. In this article, we reflect on the design process of an intelligent ecosystem, called ORBIT, and a proposed evaluative study planned with it. This was part of a DED project in collaboration with a medical hospital to study the post-operative behavior in the (remote) context of bariatric patients. The design and preparation of this project and the process towards an eventual study rejection from the medical ethical committee (METC) provide rich insights into (1) what it means to conduct DED research in a clinical context, and (2) where the boundaries of the method might lie in this specific application area. We highlight insights from carefully designing the substantial infrastructure for the study, and how different aspects of DED translated less easily to the clinical context. We analyze the proposed study setup through the lenses of several modifications we made to DED and further reflect on how to expand and scale up the methodology and adapt the process for the clinical context.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0890060421000433","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,5,19]],"date-time":"2022-05-19T08:07:47Z","timestamp":1652947667000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/policypage","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":17,"title":["Breaking up data-enabled design: expanding and scaling up for the clinical context"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"36","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6031-9801","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Renee","family":"Noortman","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2670-7042","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Peter","family":"Lovei","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5877-2802","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Mathias","family":"Funk","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Eva","family":"Deckers","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8804-5366","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Stephan","family":"Wensveen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2285-0634","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Berry","family":"Eggen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,5,19]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0890060421000433_ref4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-1-4939-0378-8_18"},{"key":"S0890060421000433_ref38","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/009286150303700105"},{"key":"S0890060421000433_ref7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1056\/NEJMp078199"},{"key":"S0890060421000433_ref40","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1136\/medhum-2016-010934"},{"key":"S0890060421000433_ref43","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3210604.3210611"},{"key":"S0890060421000433_ref44","first-page":"1","article-title":"Ethical challenges of community based participatory research: exploring researchers\u2019 experience","volume":"21","author":"Wilson","year":"2017","journal-title":"International Journal of Social Research Methodology"},{"key":"S0890060421000433_ref22","volume-title":"The Foundations of EU Data Protection Law","author":"Lynskey","year":"2015"},{"key":"S0890060421000433_ref16","unstructured":"Kollenburg, Jv and Bogers, S (2019) Data-Enabled Design (Ph.D. thesis).
