Retrieval is done in two phases: in the first, a \nconventional retrieval method (the Okapi system) is used; in the second, complex index terms \nsuch as syntactic relations and single words with part-of-speech information are introduced \nto rerank the results of the first phase. We evaluated the effectiveness of the different types \nof index terms through experiments using the TREC-7 test collection and 50 queries. The \nretrieval effectiveness was improved for 32 out of 50 queries. Based on this investigation, \nwe then introduce a method to select effective index terms by using a decision tree. Further \nexperiments with the same test collection showed that retrieval effectiveness was improved in \n25 of the 50 queries.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s1351324902002899","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2002,8,27]],"date-time":"2002-08-27T01:14:38Z","timestamp":1030410878000},"page":"193-207","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Selecting effective index terms \nusing a decision tree"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"8","author":[{"given":"TOKUNAGA","family":"TAKENOBU","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"KIMURA","family":"KENJI","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"OGIBAYASHI","family":"HIRONORI","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"TANAKA","family":"HOZUMI","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2002,8,21]]},"container-title":["Natural Language Engineering"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/services\/aop-cambridge-core\/content\/view\/S1351324902002899","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,4,5]],"date-time":"2019-04-05T18:57:44Z","timestamp":1554490664000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/product\/identifier\/S1351324902002899\/type\/journal_article"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2002,6]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"2-3","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2002,6]]}},"alternative-id":["S1351324902002899"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/s1351324902002899","relation":{},"ISSN":["1351-3249","1469-8110"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1351-3249","type":"print"},{"value":"1469-8110","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2002,6]]}}}
