We present an architectural system \nthat contributes to engineering robustness and low-overhead systems development (GATE, a \nGeneral Architecture for Text Engineering). To verify our ideas we present results from the \ndevelopment of a multi-purpose cross-genre Named Entity recognition system. This system \naims be robust across diverse input types, and to reduce the need for costly and timeconsuming adaptation of systems to new applications, with its capability to process texts \nfrom widely differing domains and genres.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s1351324902002930","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2002,8,27]],"date-time":"2002-08-27T01:14:38Z","timestamp":1030410878000},"page":"257-274","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":37,"title":["Architectural elements of \nlanguage engineering robustness"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"8","author":[{"given":"DIANA","family":"MAYNARD","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"VALENTIN","family":"TABLAN","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"HAMISH","family":"CUNNINGHAM","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"CRISTIAN","family":"URSU","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"HORACIO","family":"SAGGION","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"KALINA","family":"BONTCHEVA","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"YORICK","family":"WILKS","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2002,8,23]]},"container-title":["Natural Language Engineering"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/services\/aop-cambridge-core\/content\/view\/S1351324902002930","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,4,5]],"date-time":"2019-04-05T18:57:37Z","timestamp":1554490657000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/product\/identifier\/S1351324902002930\/type\/journal_article"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2002,6]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"2-3","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2002,6]]}},"alternative-id":["S1351324902002930"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/s1351324902002930","relation":{},"ISSN":["1351-3249","1469-8110"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1351-3249","type":"print"},{"value":"1469-8110","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2002,6]]}}}
