Some sources say that disjunction in its use as connecting propositions or formulas was introduced by Peano; others suggest that it originated as an abbreviation of the Latin word for \u201cor,\u201d<jats:italic>vel<\/jats:italic>. We show that the origin of the symbol<jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" mime-subtype=\"png\" xlink:href=\"S1755020321000587_inline4.png\"\/><jats:tex-math>$\\mathbin {\\boldsymbol {\\vee }}$<\/jats:tex-math><\/jats:alternatives><\/jats:inline-formula>for disjunction can be traced to Whitehead and Russell\u2019s pre-<jats:italic>Principia<\/jats:italic>work in formal logic. Because of<jats:italic>Principia<\/jats:italic>\u2019s influence, its notation was widely adopted by philosophers working in logic (the logical empiricists in the 1920s and 1930s, especially Carnap and early Quine). Hilbert\u2019s adoption of<jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" mime-subtype=\"png\" xlink:href=\"S1755020321000587_inline5.png\"\/><jats:tex-math>$\\mathbin {\\boldsymbol {\\vee }}$<\/jats:tex-math><\/jats:alternatives><\/jats:inline-formula>in his<jats:italic>Grundz\u00fcge der theoretischen Logik<\/jats:italic>guaranteed its widespread use by mathematical logicians.
