One H<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> is produced when \nan anaerobically generated ATP is utilized. We theorized that \nH<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> production directly reflects anaerobic glucose \nconsumption. From the choroid (pH \u223c7.40), \n[H<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>]<jats:sub>o<\/jats:sub> steadily increased to \na maximum concentration in the proximal portion of the outer \nnuclear layer (pH\u223c7.20). The shape of the profile was always \nconcave down, indicating that a net production of H<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> \noccurred across the avascular outer retina. A three-layer diffusion \nmodel of the outer retina was developed and fitted to the data \nto quantify photoreceptor H<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> extrusion into the \nextracellular space (<jats:italic>Q<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>OR-H<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup><\/jats:sub>). \nIt was determined that the outer segment (OS) layer had negligible \nH<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> extrusion. The data were then refitted to a special \nthree-layer model in which the OS layer <jats:italic>Q<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>H<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup><\/jats:sub> \nwas set equal to zero, but in which the inner segments and outer \nnuclear layer produced H<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>.
