Data included Portuguese children and adolescents (3\u201317 years) from a National Dietary Survey Sample (IAN-AF 2015\/2016,<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic>987). Dietary intake was obtained by 2-d food diaries (children) or 2\u201324-h-recall (adolescents). Participants were classified into four groups of EL: \u2018Home\u2019, \u2018Other homes\u2019, \u2018School\u2019 and \u2018Restaurants\u2019. Diet quality was measured as a higher adherence to a healthy eating pattern. A previous developed socio-economic classification was used, and participants were grouped as belonging to a low socio-economic environment (LSE) or middle-high socio-economic environment (MHSE). Linear regression models were used to evaluate the association between EL and diet quality, stratified by the SEE. A statistically significant interaction effect was found (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>&lt; 0\u00b701) for the SEE in the association between EL and diet quality. After adjustment for potential confounders, in LSE, participants belonging to \u2018Other homes\u2019 (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>= \u20132\u00b707; 95 % CI:\u20133\u00b770, \u20130\u00b744) and \u2018Restaurants\u2019 (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>= \u20133\u00b731; 95 % CI: \u20135\u00b708, \u20131\u00b754) had lower scores in the diet quality score, comparing to \u2018Home\u2019. In MHSE, comparing with \u2018Home\u2019, \u2018Restaurants\u2019 showed lower diet quality (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>= \u20131\u00b756; 95 % CI:\u20132\u00b765, \u20130\u00b748), while the \u2018School\u2019 had better diet quality (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>= 0\u00b790; 95 % CI: 0\u00b716, 1\u00b764).
