The coronavirus disease-19 pandemic has revealed flaws and weaknesses in contemporary food systems, with many school-age children experiencing food insecurity and hunger. There is intense debate among policymakers regarding whether government SFP should be universal or targeted. Countries such as Brazil and India, which have two of the most comprehensive universal free-of-charge programmes, have shown the benefits of SFP, including improved nutritional status, support for more sustainable food systems, attendance and academic performance. Evidence shows and supports actions advocating that it is time to offer healthy and free school meals for all students.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0007114523002660","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,11,28]],"date-time":"2023-11-28T04:58:40Z","timestamp":1701147520000},"page":"1447-1451","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/policypage","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["It is time: free meals at schools for all"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"131","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1638-1437","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Daniel Henrique","family":"Bandoni","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Isabela Cicaroni","family":"Ottoni","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0745-8201","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ana Laura Benevenuto","family":"Amorim","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9672-4983","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Daniela Silva","family":"Canella","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,11,28]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref8","first-page":"e164","article-title":"Food environment and excess weight in schoolchildren: a South American systematic review","volume":"46","author":"de Oliveira Cardozo","year":"2022","journal-title":"Rev Panam Salud Publica"},{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref38","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s13679-021-00462-w"},{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref18","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1108\/BFJ-03-2014-0099"},{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref28","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3945\/ajcn.110.001685"},{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref34","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.15343\/0104-7809.20194302374389"},{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref33","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1186\/s40985-017-0056-5"},{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1136\/bmj.o2640"},{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref25","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3390\/nu10060706"},{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/10408398.2016.1197180"},{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref13","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1038\/s41598-019-43611-x"},{"key":"S0007114523002660_ref24","unstructured":"24.
