Entomol. Res."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2020,6]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p><jats:italic>Sitophilus zeamais<\/jats:italic> is a key pest of stored grains. Its control is made, usually, using synthetic insecticides, despite their negative impacts. Botanical insecticides with fumigant\/repellent properties may offer an alternative solution. This work describes the effects of <jats:italic>Anethum graveolens<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Petroselinum crispum<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Foeniculum vulgare<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Cuminum cyminum<\/jats:italic> essential oils (EOs) and (<jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic>)-carvone, cuminaldehyde, estragole and (+)-fenchone towards adults of <jats:italic>S. zeamais<\/jats:italic>. Acute toxicity was assessed by fumigation and topical application. Repellence was evaluated by an area preference bioassay and two-choice test, using maize grains. LC<jats:sub>50<\/jats:sub> determined by fumigation ranged from 51.8 to 535.8 mg L<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup> air, with (<jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic>)-carvone being the most active. LD<jats:sub>50<\/jats:sub> values for topical applications varied from 23 to 128 \u00b5g per adult for (<jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic>)-carvone &gt; cuminaldehyde &gt; <jats:italic>A. graveolens<\/jats:italic> &gt; <jats:italic>C. cyminum<\/jats:italic> &gt; <jats:italic>P. crispum<\/jats:italic>. All EOs\/standard compounds reduced significantly the percentage of insects attracted to maize grains (65\u201380%) in the two-choice repellence test, whereas in the area preference bioassay RD<jats:sub>50<\/jats:sub> varied from 1.4 to 45.2 \u00b5g cm<jats:sup>\u22122<\/jats:sup>, with cuminaldehyde, (<jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic>)-carvone and estragole being strongly repellents. <jats:italic>Petroselinum crispum<\/jats:italic> EO and cuminaldehyde affected the nutritional parameters relative growth rate, efficiency conversion index of ingested food and antifeeding effect, displaying antinutritional effects toward <jats:italic>S. zeamais.<\/jats:italic> In addition, <jats:italic>P. crispum<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>C. cyminum<\/jats:italic> EOs, as well as cuminaldehyde, showed the highest acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity <jats:italic>in vitro<\/jats:italic> (IC<jats:sub>50<\/jats:sub> = 185, 235 and 214.5 \u00b5g mL<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>, respectively).
