Plasma Phys."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2021,2]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>We show that the Weibel or current filamentation instability can lead to the emission of circularly polarized radiation. Using particle-in-cell simulations and a radiation post-processing numerical algorithm, we demonstrate that the level of circular polarization increases with the initial plasma magnetization, saturating at <jats:inline-formula>\n\t      <jats:alternatives>\n\t\t<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" mime-subtype=\"png\" xlink:href=\"S0022377821000040_inline1.png\"\/>\n\t\t<jats:tex-math>${\\sim }13\\,\\%$<\/jats:tex-math>\n\t      <\/jats:alternatives>\n\t    <\/jats:inline-formula> when the magnetization, given by the ratio of magnetic energy density to the electron kinetic energy density, is larger than 0.05. Furthermore, we show that this effect requires an ion\u2013electron mass ratio greater than unity.
