Ass."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2006,10]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>The present work describes the complete larval development of <jats:italic>Mithraculus sculptus<\/jats:italic> (two zoeal stages, the megalopa) and the first crab instar from laboratory cultured material. The larval morphology is compared with other descriptions currently available for the <jats:italic>Mithrax<\/jats:italic>\u2013<jats:italic>Mithraculus<\/jats:italic> complex: <jats:italic>Mithraculus coryphe<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>M. forceps<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Mithrax hispidus<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>M. pleuracanthus<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>M. spinosissimus<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>M. verrucosus<\/jats:italic>. Although the different species of the <jats:italic>Mithrax<\/jats:italic>\u2013<jats:italic>Mithraculus<\/jats:italic> complex display uniform morphological characters, the first zoeal stage of <jats:italic>M. sculptus<\/jats:italic> differs from other species in the setal meristics of the carapace and the number of aesthetascs of the antennule. The second zoeal stage differs in the number of aesthetascs of the antennule and the number of setae in the distal margin of the coxal endite of the maxillule. The megalopa of <jats:italic>M. sculptus<\/jats:italic> can be distinguished by the presence of 3\u20134 aesthetascs and a simple seta in the distal segment of the antennule. The morphological differences between the larvae from the genus <jats:italic>Mithrax<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Mithraculus<\/jats:italic> are insufficient to support the separation of the two genera using adult morphology.
