Ass."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2009,9]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>The reproductive cycles of four limpet species, <jats:italic>Patella depressa, Patella ulyssiponensis, Patella vulgata<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Patella rustica<\/jats:italic> are described for several locations in northern and central Portugal. <jats:italic>Patella depressa<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>P. ulyssiponensis<\/jats:italic> displayed almost continual gonad activity, with two main spawning periods, September\u2013January and March\u2013June, and minor spawning events dispersed throughout the year. <jats:italic>Patella vulgata<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>P. rustica<\/jats:italic> exhibited highly synchronized reproductive cycles, with well-defined breeding and resting periods. Gonad development in <jats:italic>P. vulgata<\/jats:italic> started in September and spawning took place from November\u2013December to March. In <jats:italic>P. rustica<\/jats:italic> development started in June and spawning occurred from September\u2013October to December\u2013January.
