{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,13]],"date-time":"2026-01-13T08:55:16Z","timestamp":1768294516640,"version":"3.49.0"},"reference-count":32,"publisher":"Cambridge University Press (CUP)","issue":"6","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2010,2,4]],"date-time":"2010-02-04T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1265241600000},"content-version":"unspecified","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/terms"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Parasitology"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2010,5]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>SUMMARY<\/jats:title><jats:p>Molecular detection of<jats:italic>Babesia<\/jats:italic>species in apparently healthy cattle within an endemic region was carried out in order to determine the prevalence of carriers and the geographical distribution of<jats:italic>Babesia bigemina<\/jats:italic>and<jats:italic>Babesia bovis<\/jats:italic>in Maputo Province, Mozambique. Samples from 477 animals at 5 localities were analysed using 2 techniques, the semi-nested hot-start PCR and the reverse line blot (RLB) assay. With the semi-nested hot-start PCR, detection of<jats:italic>B. bigemina<\/jats:italic>ranged between 30% and 89%, and of<jats:italic>B. bovis<\/jats:italic>between 27% and 83%. The RLB assay was comparatively less sensitive in this study and detection of<jats:italic>B. bovis<\/jats:italic>ranged from 0% to 17%, and<jats:italic>B. bigemina<\/jats:italic>was not detected at all by this technique. Analysis of new sequences of the 18S rRNA gene revealed that the current<jats:italic>B. bigemina<\/jats:italic>RLB probe is not specific for the identification of isolates in Mozambique. The RLB assay, however, resulted in the detection of 8 other haemoparasite species belonging to the genera<jats:italic>Babesia<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>Theileria<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>Anaplasma<\/jats:italic>and<jats:italic>Ehrlichia<\/jats:italic>. 18S rRNA gene sequences from the<jats:italic>Theileria<\/jats:italic>spp. were identified, and a phylogenic tree constructed with these sequences yielded a heterogeneous<jats:italic>T. mutans-<\/jats:italic>like group. In conclusion, infection with<jats:italic>B. bigemina<\/jats:italic>and<jats:italic>B. bovis<\/jats:italic>is endemic in Maputo Province, but rates of transmission vary.
