The related species <jats:italic>L. (V.) peruviana<\/jats:italic> has only been identified in simple cutaneous lesions (CL). Hybrids between <jats:italic>L. braziliensis<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>L. peruviana<\/jats:italic> have been reported although genetic exchange in <jats:italic>Leishmania<\/jats:italic> is considered to be rare. Here we compared growth <jats:italic>in vitro,<\/jats:italic> adaptive capacity under thermal and oxidative stress and behaviour in a hamster model, of <jats:italic>L. braziliensis, L. peruviana<\/jats:italic>, and their putative hybrids. At 24\u00b0C, the optimal temperature for <jats:italic>in vitro<\/jats:italic> growth, <jats:italic>L. braziliensis<\/jats:italic> had the highest growth rate. In <jats:italic>in vitro<\/jats:italic> studies hybrid clones presented heterogeneous phenotypes, from slower growth rates, similar to <jats:italic>L. peruviana<\/jats:italic>, to higher growth rates, as observed in <jats:italic>L. braziliensis<\/jats:italic>. Hamsters infected with hybrid strains, presented the highest parasite densities and aggressive relapses at a later stage of infection.
