Beginning with a simple example of an everyday argument, we present an analysis of it visualized as an argument diagram constructed using a software tool. In the context of a brief history of the development of diagramming, it is then shown how argument diagrams have been used to analyse and work with argumentation in law, philosophy and AI.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0269888907001051","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,5,25]],"date-time":"2007-05-25T09:12:35Z","timestamp":1180084355000},"page":"87-109","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":70,"title":["Argument diagramming in logic, law and artificial intelligence"],"prefix":"10.48130","volume":"22","author":[{"given":"CHRIS","family":"REED","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"DOUGLAS","family":"WALTON","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"FABRIZIO","family":"MACAGNO","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"27968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0269888907001051_ref044","volume-title":"Elements of Logic","author":"Whately","year":"1836"},{"key":"S0269888907001051_ref040","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-90-6704-661-9"},{"key":"S0269888907001051_ref030","unstructured":"Rolf Bertil and Magnusson C , 2003 Developing the art of argumentation: a software approach In Proceedings of the 5th Conference of the International Society for the Study of Argument (ISSA) Sicsat, 919\u2013925."},{"key":"S0269888907001051_ref042","volume-title":"Argumentation Schemes for Presumptive Reasoning","author":"Walton","year":"1996"},{"key":"S0269888907001051_ref008","volume-title":"Argumentation Machines","author":"Crosswhite","year":"2003"},{"key":"S0269888907001051_ref013","volume-title":"Decision Support Systems in Urban Planning","author":"Gordon","year":"1997"},{"key":"S0269888907001051_ref009","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0004-3702(94)00041-X"},{"key":"S0269888907001051_ref034","unstructured":"Tillers Peter , 2004 Picturing Inference, An Essay in Honor of Professor Lothar Philipps.
