Above the letter level, the syllable has been shown to play a relevant role at early stages of visual word recognition in adult skilled readers. However, studies aiming to examine when, during reading acquisition, the syllable emerges as a functional sublexical unit are scarce, and the studies conducted so far have led to inconsistent results. In this work, beginning and intermediate European-Portuguese (EP) developing readers performed a sandwich masked lexical decision task in which CV (e.g., RU.MOR[rumour]) and CVC (e.g., CIS.NE[swan]) first-syllable EP words were preceded either by syllable congruent (e.g., rum.ba-RU.MOR, cis.ra-CIS.NE), syllable incongruent (e.g., rum.ba-RU.MOR, ci.ser-CIS.NE), unrelated (e.g., va.cra-RU.MOR, zar.vo-CIS.NE) pseudowords primes, or identity (e.g., ru.mour-RU.MOUR, cis.ne-CIS.NE) primes. Results showed reliable syllable effects only for intermediate readers and for CV and CVC words alike. Findings are discussed attending to current models of visual word recognition.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1017\/s0305000920000537","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,9,22]],"date-time":"2020-09-22T05:46:36Z","timestamp":1600753596000},"page":"699-716","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/policypage","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Syllable effects in beginning and intermediate European-Portuguese readers: Evidence from a sandwich masked go\/no-go lexical decision task"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"48","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8061-9118","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ana Duarte","family":"CAMPOS","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Helena Mendes","family":"OLIVEIRA","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Ana Paula","family":"SOARES","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,9,22]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0305000920000537_ref59","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3758\/BF03196742"},{"key":"S0305000920000537_ref8","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s11145-018-9835-8"},{"key":"S0305000920000537_ref46","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0022-5371(81)90450-3"},{"key":"S0305000920000537_ref62","first-page":"245","volume-title":"Attention and performance XII: The psychology of reading","author":"Seidenberg","year":"1987"},{"key":"S0305000920000537_ref56","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0749-596X(86)90038-0"},{"key":"S0305000920000537_ref37","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1017\/S113874160000367X"},{"key":"S0305000920000537_ref79","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/17470218.2014.964271"},{"key":"S0305000920000537_ref80","first-page":"55","volume-title":"Learning disabilities es: Vol. 1.
