Energy expenditure\n                        (metabolic energy equivalent tasks) and dietary intake during the past year\n                        were assessed using a PA questionnaire and a semi-quantitative\n                        food-frequency questionnaire, respectively.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980007001309_abs3\" sec-type=\"general\"><jats:title>Setting<\/jats:title><jats:p>Representative sample of adults in Porto, Portugal.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980007001309_abs4\" sec-type=\"subjects\"><jats:title>Subjects<\/jats:title><jats:p>Data were analysed for 2404 Portuguese Caucasian adults, aged between 18 and\n                        92 years.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980007001309_abs5\" sec-type=\"results\"><jats:title>Results<\/jats:title><jats:p>For total PA, males who were active had significantly higher mean intake of\n                        energy (10\u00b776 (2570\u00b77) vs. 9\u00b778\n                        (2336\u00b79) MJ\/d (kcal\/d), <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>\n                        &lt; 0\u00b7001) and lower level of protein consumption\n                        (16\u00b79 vs. 17\u00b76 % of energy, <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic> &lt; 0\u00b7001) compared with sedentary males.\n                        In males, the association between total PA and energy intake remained after\n                        adjustment for age, education and body mass index. Similar results were\n                        observed when occupational activity was analysed. Concerning the energy\n                        expended in leisure time, in both genders, after adjustment for the\n                        previously described variables, a significant positive association was found\n                        between PA and intake of vitamin C (g\/d): <jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic> = 0\u00b712, 99 % confidence interval\n                        (CI) 0\u00b702, 0\u00b721 for females and <jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic> = 0\u00b713, 99 % CI\n                        0\u00b703, 0\u00b722 for males.
