Subjects were randomly assigned into four groups and were advised energy-restricted diets for 8 weeks, including no seafood (control), cod, salmon or fish oil. A validated FFQ was used to evaluate the consumption of seafood at baseline, midpoint and endpoint, and long-chain <jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic>-3 fatty acids in blood erythrocytes were measured.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S136898000800253X_abs4\" sec-type=\"general\"><jats:title>Setting<\/jats:title><jats:p>Iceland, Ireland and Spain.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S136898000800253X_abs5\" sec-type=\"subjects\"><jats:title>Subjects<\/jats:title><jats:p>The sample (<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> 324); 20\u201340-year-olds with BMI = 27\u00b75\u201332\u00b75 kg\/m<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>; 85 % participated.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S136898000800253X_abs6\" sec-type=\"results\"><jats:title>Results<\/jats:title><jats:p>At baseline, 34 % of the participants reported eating fish at least twice a week as the main course. During the intervention, six participants reported that they did not finish their fish portions, 15 % of the participants consumed small amount of fish additional to the study protocol in weeks 1\u20134 and 23 % in weeks 5\u20138 (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic> = 0\u00b7010). Changes in erythrocyte long-chain <jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic>-3 fatty acids confirmed good compliance, with increases in the salmon (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic> &lt; 0\u00b7001) and fish oil (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic> &lt; 0\u00b7001) groups, smaller increase in the cod group (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic> = 0\u00b7037) and decrease in the control group (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic> = 0\u00b7030).<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S136898000800253X_abs7\" sec-type=\"conclusion\"><jats:title>Conclusion<\/jats:title><jats:p>Frequency of fish consumption among 66 % of young European overweight adults is lower than frequently recommended. Compliance to varying seafood consumption was good.
