Vitamin D intake was assessed by an FFQ and 25(OH)D was measured in a fasting blood sample.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980017002804_abs3\" sec-type=\"general\"><jats:title>Setting<\/jats:title><jats:p>Public and private schools in Porto, Portugal.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980017002804_abs4\" sec-type=\"subjects\"><jats:title>Subjects<\/jats:title><jats:p>Adolescents aged 13 years (<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> 521) enrolled at school (EPITeen cohort).<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980017002804_abs5\" sec-type=\"results\"><jats:title>Results<\/jats:title><jats:p>Both mean (<jats:sc>sd<\/jats:sc>) intake and serum 25(OH)D level were far below the recommended, 4\u00b747 (2\u00b749) \u00b5g\/d and 16\u00b75 (5\u00b77) ng\/ml, respectively. A significant difference in serum level was found according to season, with lower values in winter than summer (14\u00b78 (4\u00b76) <jats:italic>v.<\/jats:italic> 17\u00b73 (5\u00b79) ng\/ml, <jats:italic>P&lt;<\/jats:italic>0\u00b7001). Vitamin D intake was weakly correlated with serum 25(OH)D (<jats:italic>r<\/jats:italic>=0\u00b7056, <jats:italic>P=<\/jats:italic>0\u00b7203).<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980017002804_abs6\" sec-type=\"conclusions\"><jats:title>Conclusions<\/jats:title><jats:p>Dietary vitamin D and serum 25(OH)D levels were positively but weakly correlated and the error was higher among those with higher serum 25(OH)D concentration. Our results support the need for strategies that promote increase of the most important food sources of vitamin D to reduce the high prevalence of low vitamin D
