Weight, height, sitting height and waist circumference were measured. Obesity was assessed for men and women through BMI and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Short stature (women, &lt;152 cm; men, &lt;164 cm) and high SHR (women, \u226554\u00b705 %; men, \u226553\u00b725 %) were taken as stunting measures. OR with 95 % CI were computed using logistic regression models.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980018000460_abs3\" sec-type=\"general\"><jats:title>Setting<\/jats:title><jats:p>Representative sample of adults from EPIPorto, an adult cohort study from Porto, Portugal.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980018000460_abs4\" sec-type=\"subjects\"><jats:title>Subjects<\/jats:title><jats:p>A sample of 1682 adults, aged 18\u201386 years, was analysed.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980018000460_abs5\" sec-type=\"results\"><jats:title>Results<\/jats:title><jats:p>Higher obesity prevalence was found among women (BMI\u226530\u00b70 kg\/m<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>: 25\u00b75<jats:italic>v.<\/jats:italic>13\u00b73 %,<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>&lt;0\u00b7001) and a higher proportion of men presented abdominal obesity (WHtR\u22650\u00b75: 80\u00b71<jats:italic>v.<\/jats:italic>71\u00b71 %,<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>&lt;0\u00b7001). A positive association was found between short stature and obesity measures for women (multivariate-adjusted OR; 95 % CI: 1\u00b775; 1\u00b717, 2\u00b762 for BMI\u226530\u00b70 kg\/m<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>; 1\u00b789; 1\u00b724, 2\u00b787 for WHtR\u22650\u00b75). Increased SHR was associated with higher likelihood of having BMI\u226530\u00b70 kg\/m<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>in both sexes (multivariate-adjusted OR; 95 % CI: 2\u00b710; 1\u00b740, 3\u00b716 for women; 1\u00b792; 1\u00b707, 3\u00b743 for men) but not with WHtR\u22650\u00b75.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec id=\"S1368980018000460_abs6\" sec-type=\"conclusions\"><jats:title>Conclusions<\/jats:title><jats:p>Different growth markers are associated with obesity in adults.
