This assessment requires a deep understanding of how terminal and nonterminal incurable patients feel, what might prompt them to request a hastened death, and the potential withdrawal of such a request. Methods: We developed a new evaluation instrument to assess the will to hasten death, based on the most rigorous and current literature in this area. We then discussed the experimental version of the scale with 18 specialists in palliative care. Results: This study presents the two phases of the developmental process of the Will to Hasten Death Evaluation Scale (WHDES). We describe the steps for developing the scale and present an analysis of the results by specialists in palliative care.
