In the nineteenth century, the pre\u2010bomb, pre\u2010industrial \u0394<jats:sup>14<\/jats:sup>C value of surface ocean waters as seen in these corals of the Gulf Stream in the Florida Straits was \u221251 \u00b1 2\u2030. By 1955, uptake of industrial CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> by these waters had lowered the \u0394<jats:sup>14<\/jats:sup>C values to about \u221261\u2030. The results can be used to make predictions regarding anthropogenic CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> that can be expected to enter the oceans in future decades.
