Res."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1989,8,30]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>Measurements of total water were made with Lyman \u03b1 resonance fluorescence hygrometers mounted on the ER\u20102 and DC\u20108 aircraft. Direct evidence was obtained for dehydration of the lower stratosphere over Antarctica; minimum values were about 1.5 parts per million by volume (ppmv), compared with values of 3.0 4.5 ppmv immediately outside the region high potential vorticity gradient in the potential temperature range 420&lt;\u03b8&lt;460 K. On one flight, ice crystals large enough to have appreciable sedimentation velocities were observed. The DC\u20108 data at 300&lt;\u03b8&lt;320 K frequently showed extensive belts of dry, ozone\u2010rich air between 60\u00b0 and 75\u00b0S latitude, with the equatorward \u201cedge\u201d in water well correlated with that observed by the ER\u20102 some 8\u20139 km higher.
