However, little is currently known about the specificity of COVID-19 symptoms. To assess the feasibility of symptom-based screening for COVID-19, we used data from tests for common respiratory viruses and SARS-CoV-2 in our health system to measure the ability to correctly classify virus test results based on presenting symptoms. Based on these results, symptom-based screening may not be an effective strategy to identify individuals who should be tested for SARS-CoV-2 infection or to obtain a leading indicator of new COVID-19 cases.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1038\/s41746-020-0300-0","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,13]],"date-time":"2020-07-13T10:04:30Z","timestamp":1594634670000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":69,"title":["Estimating the efficacy of symptom-based screening for COVID-19"],"prefix":"10.1038","volume":"3","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5163-380X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Alison","family":"Callahan","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7166-5032","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ethan","family":"Steinberg","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Jason A.","family":"Fries","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5581-8569","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Saurabh","family":"Gombar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7673-6143","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Birju","family":"Patel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Conor K.","family":"Corbin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Nigam H.","family":"Shah","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"297","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,13]]},"reference":[{"key":"300_CR1","unstructured":"Goode, L.
