In the present study, we used prospective predictions from a real-time machine learning prognostic algorithm to identify two trajectories of all-cause mortality risk for decedents with cancer. We show that patients with an unpredictable trajectory, where mortality risk rises only close to death, are significantly less likely to receive guideline-based end-of-life care and may not benefit from the integration of prognostic algorithms in practice.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1038\/s41746-021-00477-6","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,7,1]],"date-time":"2021-07-01T10:02:45Z","timestamp":1625133765000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["Trajectories of mortality risk among patients with cancer and associated end-of-life utilization"],"prefix":"10.1038","volume":"4","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2692-6306","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ravi B.","family":"Parikh","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Manqing","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Eric","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0154-2202","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Runze","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jinbo","family":"Chen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"297","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,7,1]]},"reference":[{"unstructured":"Institute of Medicine.
