However, their extreme instability poses a substantial synthetic challenge and no neutral molecular nitrogen allotrope beyond N\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    has been isolated\n                    <jats:sup>2,3<\/jats:sup>\n                    . Here we present the room-temperature preparation of molecular N\n                    <jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>\n                    (hexanitrogen) through the gas-phase reaction of chlorine or bromine with silver azide, followed by trapping in argon matrices at 10\u2009K. We also prepared neat N\n                    <jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>\n                    as a film at liquid nitrogen temperature (77\u2009K), further indicating its stability. Infrared and ultraviolet\u2013visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy,\n                    <jats:sup>15<\/jats:sup>\n                    N-isotope labelling and ab initio computations firmly support our findings.
