{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,11]],"date-time":"2025-10-11T17:33:29Z","timestamp":1760204009416},"reference-count":48,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"8","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2009,1,29]],"date-time":"2009-01-29T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1233187200000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":1642,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":["bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com"],"crossmark-restriction":true},"short-container-title":["British J Pharmacology"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2004,8]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>\n<jats:list list-type=\"explicit-label\">\n<jats:list-item><jats:p>This study evaluated the response of the Na<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>\/H<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> exchanger (NHE) to dopamine D<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\u2010 and D<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\u2010like receptor stimulation in immortalized renal proximal tubular epithelial cells and freshly isolated renal proximal tubules from the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and their normotensive controls (Wistar Kyoto rats; WKY).<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item>\n<jats:list-item><jats:p>Stimulation of D<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\u2010like receptors with SKF 38393 attenuated NHE activity in WKY cells (IC<jats:sub>50<\/jats:sub>=151 n<jats:sc>M<\/jats:sc>), but not in SHR cells. Stimulation of D<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\u2010like receptors with quinerolane (IC<jats:sub>50<\/jats:sub>=120 n<jats:sc>M<\/jats:sc>) attenuated NHE activity in SHR cells, but not in WKY cells. Forskolin was equipotent in SHR and WKY cells in inhibiting NHE activity. The effect of SKF 38393 was abolished by overnight treatment of WKY cells with cholera toxin (CTX, 500 ng ml<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>), but not with pertussis toxin (PTX, 100 ng ml<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>). The effect of quinerolane (1 <jats:italic>\u03bc<\/jats:italic><jats:sc>M<\/jats:sc>) was abolished by overnight treatment of SHR cells with PTX, but not with CTX.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item>\n<jats:list-item><jats:p>The D<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> receptor agonist 7\u2010OH\u2010DPAT (IC<jats:sub>50<\/jats:sub>=0.8 <jats:italic>\u03bc<\/jats:italic><jats:sc>M<\/jats:sc>) attenuated NHE activity in SHR cells only. This effect was abolished by <jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic>\u2010sulpiride and by overnight treatment with PTX.
