The emergence and advances in sequencing technology provided a way to access genome information, namely to identify and study evolutionary macro-events, as well as chromosome alterations for clinical purposes. This paper describes a completely alignment-free computational method, based on a blind unsupervised approach, to detect large-scale and small-scale genomic rearrangements between pairs of DNA sequences. To illustrate the power and usefulness of the method we give complete chromosomal information maps for the pairs human-chimpanzee and human-orangutan. The tool by means of which these results were obtained has been made publicly available and is described in detail.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1038\/srep10203","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,5,18]],"date-time":"2015-05-18T13:58:25Z","timestamp":1431957505000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":26,"title":["An alignment-free method to find and visualise rearrangements between pairs of DNA sequences"],"prefix":"10.1038","volume":"5","author":[{"given":"Diogo","family":"Pratas","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Raquel M.","family":"Silva","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Armando J.","family":"Pinho","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Paulo J.S.G.","family":"Ferreira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"297","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2015,5,18]]},"reference":[{"key":"BFsrep10203_CR1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Avelar, A., Perfeito, L., Gordo, I. & Ferreira, M.
