{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,7]],"date-time":"2026-03-07T18:39:58Z","timestamp":1772908798810,"version":"3.50.1"},"reference-count":36,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"3","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2002,1,4]],"date-time":"2002-01-04T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1010102400000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":1221,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Clinical Endocrinology"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1998,9]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec><jats:title>OBJECTIVE<\/jats:title><jats:p>To elucidate the interaction between insulin and dehydroepi\u2010androsterone (DHEA) concentrations, we evaluated serum DHEA and DHEA\u2010sulphate (DHEA\u2010S) levels in diabetic patients with hyperinsulinaemia.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>PATIENTS AND DESIGN<\/jats:title><jats:p>Twenty\u2010four subjects with non\u2010insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, 12 hyperinsulinaemic subjects (fasting serum insulin concentrations 10\u2003mU\/ml (71.8\u2003pmol\/l)) and 12 non\u2010hyperinsulinaemic subjects, and 10 normal control subjects were studied. Serum DHEA, DHEA\u2010S, cortisol and ACTH levels were investigated in these subjects. Moreover, their serum DHEA levels were compared during hyperinsulinaemic\u2013euglycaemic clamp and after ACTH stimulation.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>MEASUREMENTS<\/jats:title><jats:p>Serum insulin, cortisol, ACTH, DHEA and DHEA\u2010S concentrations were evaluated by RIA. Serum glucose was determined by the glucose oxidase method.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>RESULTS<\/jats:title><jats:p>Diabetic patients with hyperinsulinaemia showed significantly lower levels of serum DHEA and DHEA\u2010S than controls. After ACTH stimulation, these patients also showed significantly lower DHEA levels. During the hyperinsulinaemic\u2013euglycaemic clamp, serum DHEA concentrations of diabetic patients with hyperinsulinaemia remained low and did not decline further, although those of control subjects and non\u2010hyperinsulinaemic diabetic patients showed a significant decline of serum DHEA levels. Even after ACTH stimulation during the clamp, serum DHEA in hyperinsulinaemic patients was still significantly lower than in controls.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>CONCLUSIONS<\/jats:title><jats:p>In diabetic patients with hyperinsulinaemia, baseline DHEA levels are chronically and maximally suppressed compared to control subjects and non\u2010hyperinsulinaemic diabetic patients, and thus not decreased further by exogenous insulin infusion during hyperinsulinaemic\u2013euglycaemic
