The genes shared 86% and 89% identity at the amino acid and nucleotide levels, respectively, while their proteins shared 30\u201373% identities with other eukaryotic highaffinity NO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u2013<\/jats:sup>transporters. Both genes were induced by NO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u2013<\/jats:sup>, but<\/jats:bold><jats:bold>Nrt2;1At<\/jats:bold><jats:bold>gene expression was not apparent in 2\u2010 and 5\u2010day\u2010old plants. By 10\u2003days, and thereafter,<\/jats:bold><jats:bold>Nrt2;1At<\/jats:bold><jats:bold>gene expression in roots was substantially higher than for the<\/jats:bold><jats:bold>Nrt2;2At<\/jats:bold><jats:bold>gene. Root<\/jats:bold><jats:bold>Nrt2;1At<\/jats:bold><jats:bold>expression levels were strongly correlated with inducible high\u2010affinity<jats:sup>13<\/jats:sup>NO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u2013<\/jats:sup>influx into intact roots under several treatment conditions.
