In tomato, a distinct spatial distribution of <jats:italic>Tkn2 KNOX<\/jats:italic> transcripts compared to <jats:italic>Antirrhinum<\/jats:italic> and maize suggests either a different spatial distribution of tomato <jats:italic>PHAN<\/jats:italic> (<jats:italic>Le\u2010phan<\/jats:italic>) transcripts, or that <jats:italic>PHAN<\/jats:italic> alone is insufficient for <jats:italic>KNOX<\/jats:italic> repression in tomato. We established the pattern of <jats:italic>Le\u2010phan<\/jats:italic> expression, including a first demonstration of <jats:italic>PHAN<\/jats:italic> expression in healthy roots, and found <jats:italic>Le\u2010phan<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Tkn2<\/jats:italic> transcripts to be temporally and spatially coincidental, with <jats:italic>PHAN<\/jats:italic> exhibiting an expression pattern in tomato distinct from that in plants with simple leaves.
