However, the limited number of <jats:italic>Euclid<\/jats:italic> bands (four) and the low availability of ancillary data could make the identification of <jats:italic>z<\/jats:italic>\u2004&gt;\u20046 galaxies challenging.<\/jats:p>\n<jats:p><jats:italic>Aims.<\/jats:italic> In this work we assess the degree of contamination by intermediate-redshift galaxies (<jats:italic>z<\/jats:italic>\u2004=\u20041\u20135.8) expected for <jats:italic>z<\/jats:italic>\u2004&gt;\u20046 galaxies within the Euclid Deep Survey.<\/jats:p>\n<jats:p><jats:italic>Methods.<\/jats:italic> This study is based on \u223c176 000 real galaxies at <jats:italic>z<\/jats:italic>\u2004=\u20041\u20138 in a \u223c0.7 deg<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup> area selected from the UltraVISTA ultra-deep survey and \u223c96 000 mock galaxies with 25.3\u2004\u2264\u2004<jats:italic>H<\/jats:italic>\u2004&lt;\u200427.0, which altogether cover the range of magnitudes to be probed in the Euclid Deep Survey. We simulate <jats:italic>Euclid<\/jats:italic> and ancillary photometry from fiducial 28-band photometry and fit spectral energy distributions to various combinations of these simulated data.<\/jats:p>\n<jats:p><jats:italic>Results.<\/jats:italic> We demonstrate that identifying <jats:italic>z<\/jats:italic>\u2004&gt;\u20046 galaxies with <jats:italic>Euclid<\/jats:italic> data alone will be very effective, with a <jats:italic>z<\/jats:italic>\u2004&gt;\u20046 recovery of 91% (88%) for bright (faint) galaxies. For the UltraVISTA-like bright sample, the percentage of <jats:italic>z<\/jats:italic>\u2004=\u20041\u20135.8 contaminants amongst apparent <jats:italic>z<\/jats:italic>\u2004&gt;\u20046 galaxies as observed with <jats:italic>Euclid<\/jats:italic> alone is 18%, which is reduced to 4% (13%) by including ultra-deep <jats:italic>Rubin<\/jats:italic> (<jats:italic>Spitzer<\/jats:italic>) photometry. Conversely, for the faint mock sample, the contamination fraction with <jats:italic>Euclid<\/jats:italic> alone is considerably higher at 39%, and minimised to 7% when including ultra-deep <jats:italic>Rubin<\/jats:italic> data. For UltraVISTA-like bright galaxies, we find that <jats:italic>Euclid<\/jats:italic> (<jats:italic>I<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>E<\/jats:sub>\u2005\u2212\u2005<jats:italic>Y<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>E<\/jats:sub>) &gt; 2.8 and (<jats:italic>Y<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>E<\/jats:sub>\u2005\u2212\u2005<jats:italic>J<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>E<\/jats:sub>) &lt; 1.4 colour criteria can separate contaminants from true <jats:italic>z<\/jats:italic>\u2004&gt;\u20046 galaxies, although these are applicable to only 54% of the contaminants as many have unconstrained (<jats:italic>I<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>E<\/jats:sub>\u2005\u2212\u2005<jats:italic>Y<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>E<\/jats:sub>) colours. In the best scenario, these cuts reduce the contamination fraction to 1% whilst preserving 81% of the fiducial <jats:italic>z<\/jats:italic>\u2004&gt;\u20046 sample.
