In addition to age, the number varies allometrically between species, larger and longer-lived animals tending to have more follicles initially and these disappear at a slower rate. A causal relationship between follicle depletion and menopause clearly exists, and there is a gradual acceleration of follicle wastage in the human ovary beginning more than a decade before the end of menstrual life. A mathematical model has provided confirmatory evidence of this relationship, and indicates that menopause is triggered by a threshold number of follicles which varies stochastically with a mean of 1100<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1071\/r98043","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2003,11,16]],"date-time":"2003-11-16T22:34:53Z","timestamp":1069022093000},"page":"73-78","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":49,"title":["Biological bases of premature ovarian failure"],"prefix":"10.1071","volume":"10","author":[{"given":"Roger G.","family":"Gosden","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Malcolm J.","family":"Faddy","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"67","container-title":["Reproduction, Fertility and Development"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/connectsci.au\/rd\/article-pdf\/10\/1\/73\/296561\/r98043.pdf","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"syndication"},{"URL":"https:\/\/connectsci.au\/rd\/article-pdf\/10\/1\/73\/296561\/r98043.pdf","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,28]],"date-time":"2025-10-28T21:44:41Z","timestamp":1761687881000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/connectsci.au\/rd\/article\/10\/1\/73\/47472\/Biological-bases-of-premature-ovarian-failure"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1998,8,12]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[1998,8,12]]}},"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1071\/r98043","relation":{},"ISSN":["1031-3613","1448-5990"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1031-3613","type":"print"},{"value":"1448-5990","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1998,8,12]]}}}
