U.S.A."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2000,2,29]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>\n            The voltage-sensitive sodium channel confers electrical\n excitability on neurons, a fundamental property required for higher\n processes including cognition. The ion-conducting \u03b1-subunit of the\n channel is regulated by two known auxiliary subunits, \u03b21 and \u03b22. We\n have identified rat and human forms of an additional subunit, \u03b23. It\n is most closely related to \u03b21 and is the product of a separate gene\n localized to human chromosome 11q23.3. When expressed in\n            <jats:italic>Xenopus<\/jats:italic>\n            oocytes, \u03b23 inactivates sodium channel opening\n more slowly than \u03b21 does. Structural modeling has identified an amino\n acid residue in the putative \u03b1-subunit binding site of \u03b23 that may\n play a role in this difference. The expression of \u03b23 within the\n central nervous system differs significantly from \u03b21.
