U.S.A."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2001,2,27]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>Restenosis is due to neointimal hyperplasia, which occurs in the\n coronary artery after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty\n (PTCA). During restenosis, an impairment of nitric oxide (NO)-dependent\n pathways may occur. Concomitant hypercholesterolemia may exacerbate\n restenosis in patients undergoing PTCA. Here, we show that a\n NO-releasing aspirin derivative (NCX-4016) reduces the degree of\n restenosis after balloon angioplasty in low-density lipoprotein\n receptor-deficient mice and this effect is associated with reduced\n vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and macrophage\n deposition at the site of injury. Drugs were administered following\n both therapeutic or preventive protocols. We demonstrate that NCX-4016\n is effective both in prevention and treatment of restenosis in the\n presence of hypercholesterolemia. These data indicate that impairment\n of NO-dependent mechanisms may be involved in the development of\n restenosis in hypercholesterolemic mice.
