U.S.A."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2006,7,5]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>\n            The\n            <jats:italic>sst1<\/jats:italic>\n            locus has been identified in a mouse model to control resistance and susceptibility of\n            <jats:italic>Mycobacterium tuberculosis<\/jats:italic>\n            infection. Subsequent studies have now identified\n            <jats:italic>Ipr1<\/jats:italic>\n            (intracellular pathogen resistance 1) to be the gene responsible.\n            <jats:italic>Ipr1<\/jats:italic>\n            is encoded within the\n            <jats:italic>sst1<\/jats:italic>\n            locus and is expressed in the tuberculosis lung lesions and macrophages of\n            <jats:italic>sst1<\/jats:italic>\n            -resistant, but not\n            <jats:italic>sst1<\/jats:italic>\n            -susceptible mice. We have therefore examined the closest human homologue of\n            <jats:italic>Ipr1<\/jats:italic>\n            , SP110, for its ability to control susceptibility to\n            <jats:italic>M. tuberculosis<\/jats:italic>\n            infection in humans. In a study of families from The Gambia we have identified three polymorphisms that are associated with disease. On examination of additional families from Guinea-Bissau and the Republic of Guinea, two of these associations were independently replicated.
