U.S.A."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2001,3,13]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>\n            <jats:italic>Candida albicans<\/jats:italic>\n            is a diploid fungus that has become\n a medically important opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised\n individuals. We have sequenced the\n            <jats:italic>C. albicans<\/jats:italic>\n            genome to\n 10.4-fold coverage and performed a comparative genomic analysis between\n            <jats:italic>C. albicans<\/jats:italic>\n            and\n            <jats:italic>Saccharomyces cerevisiae<\/jats:italic>\n            with the objective of assessing whether\n            <jats:italic>Candida<\/jats:italic>\n            possesses a genetic repertoire that could support a complete sexual\n cycle. Analyzing over 500 genes important for sexual differentiation in\n            <jats:italic>S. cerevisiae<\/jats:italic>\n            , we find many homologues of genes that are\n implicated in the initiation of meiosis, chromosome recombination, and\n the formation of synaptonemal complexes. However, others are striking\n in their absence.\n            <jats:italic>C. albicans<\/jats:italic>\n            seems to have homologues\n of all of the elements of a functional pheromone response pathway\n involved in mating in\n            <jats:italic>S. cerevisiae<\/jats:italic>\n            but lacks many\n homologues of\n            <jats:italic>S. cerevisiae<\/jats:italic>\n            genes for meiosis.
