U.S.A."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2003,8,5]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>\n            F\n            <jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\n            -ATPase is an ATP-driven rotary motor in which a rod-shaped\n \u03b3 subunit rotates inside a cylinder made of\n \u03b1\n            <jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\n            \u03b2\n            <jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\n            subunits. To elucidate the conformations\n of rotating F\n            <jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\n            , we measured fluorescence resonance energy transfer\n (FRET) between a donor on one of the three \u03b2s and an acceptor on \u03b3\n in single F\n            <jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\n            molecules. The yield of FRET changed stepwise at low\n ATP concentrations, reflecting the stepwise rotation of \u03b3.
